The English company Nutbrown, known for its unadorned pie funnels, created this popular elephant design during the Edwardian era, using the upturned trunk as the steam vent.

Pie funnels are ceramic or glass kitchen tools used since the late 1800s, to vent steam when baking pies. After a dish is lined with pastry crust, the funnel is placed into the centre, the filling is added, and the top crust is moulded around the figurine. While baking, the hollow centre of the pie funnel allows steam to escape the filling and prevents juices from overflowing in the oven.

Dimensions: 8.5 cm tall to tip of trunk.
